1989 190e dead! Now what to buy.

The 1989 190e has been totaled, rear ended. 135000 miles. Now my kid has 7000 to buy a car, asked me for advice. Has to be automatic, efficient on gas, r hatchback or wagon for bicycle. I am at a loss, I have nothing but old cars and haven't kept up with the newer models, Newest car Ive owned is a 95 suburban,

What is your personal recommendation and experience.

That stinks!! I'm sorry to hear, but hopefully everyone was okay. I'd suggest maybe looking at a Subaru Forester, or a Mazda 3...both very good cars in that price range (though they'd be a bit older). You could also add the Ford Focus hatch to that list, since there are plenty to choose from and they are also pretty good cars. Given the price range, I'd say the 3 would be my top choice...almost ended in one myself when I was on the market last year but settled for a VW GTI.

def. look at subarus; we got an outback H6 and it's amazing how it rides and handles, plus they are very reliable (the H6 engines anyway, stay away from H4 from late 90's into mid 2000 as they had headgasket issues) or perhaps look at nice examples of a w123 or w124 wagon. and you know he can strap a bike rack on the trunk of any sedan....

I'm generally quite a fan of them, I didn't recommend one because the DSG auto transmissions in that price range have an iffy reputation...new ones seem to be okay though. I haven't had any issues with my GTI, it is a blast to drive and the interior is miles ahead of any other car in its price range. If you so much as mutter the letters "VW" on here, a lot of times there will be a lot of disgruntled (and often misinformed) knee-jerk responses about how bad the brand is, etc. My experience has been great - my mother has a 2000 Jetta TDI that has over 200k on it with hardly any problems, and so far my GTI has been trouble free as well.

I'd be looking at a Forester or a VW. The only real issues I have w/ new VW is all the plastic interior parts break easily.

My sister hasn't had any issues at all with her 2012 jetta....seems to be overall well made, considering the price, its quite nice compared to other cars in that price bracket. My complaints about it would be: yes, its plasticy inside/outside, and the base engine is majorly wimpy. It rev's to 3500rpm just to keep up with traffic....and the 6 speed auto is annoying. A diesel + 6 speed manual is way better, but also 5k more.
