79 240d manual engine revving while comming to a stop, HELP!!!

The car in question is my dd 79 240d manual.

the symptoms are, when comming to a stop, the engine revs very very high.
it wont do this if i physicaly hold the accelerator pedal up whilst stopping.
there is the exact ammont of oil in the engine there was when i last changed it, month or so ago. so its not a head gasket.

i have replaced the motor mounts, greased the linkages.

it all started after hitting a medium sized bumb.

ive read every forum i could get my hands on and spoken to several 123 diesel experts that i know, and have made no progress.

please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well Cody your car can develop those kind of problems with age. It could be a couple things, either in and the fault of the accelerator linkage, or in the motor mounts or both. If a motor mount is broken on one side the engine can lean and that will pull on the accelerator linkage. Here are two pictures of the types of linkage found on the 240D. They are different, but have some common parts.

If your car is using the linkage on the right picture, really inspect that plastic part that rotates and it is mounted close to the firewall, right where the linkage rod takes off for the center of the engine. That rotating part can get out of whack very suddenly and is often the problem. Well the above link doesn't work, so you will have to start at the top of the page, so use this.

This is the Russian EPC, but don't let the Russian scare you. All you need is in English. Click on "car" So Scroll down to W123 240D When you get to the page listing all the major sections of the car, this accelerator section is listed as "Control" On the left picture group the part is listed as #38. That could be your problem.

Well those URL's I posted don't want to work very well for me. I did find that they would work if I removed the "question mark" and the word "form" from the end. Who knows why?

Thank you for all the help. I checked and double checked everything, till I spent sPent several hours staring at the damn thing till I noticed some scrape marks on the sway bar. Upon further examination I noticed the starboard side sway bar mount had snapped off. So when ever I stopped the sway bar what pressing on the linkage. I re welded it replaced the upper ball joints and she is ridding better than ever.
