1986 420SEL
Well I just found out that I am the proud owner of a 1986 420SEL. I am out of town right now visiting friends in Chicago and looked at a wonderful 82 300CD, called my partner to ask if he was OK with me buying it - he started hesitating, and acting funny and then said "I just knew this was going to happen you are ruining the surprise!" He said buy it if you want but if you do just know that you will now own 2 Mercedes LOL. He had just bought this 1986 420SEL that we had been negotiating on for months and had put it in the garage as a surprise anniversary gift!!! OMG I can't wait to get home now. I have known this car since it was new. It belonged to one of my close friend's family. They bought it new. My friend's mom special ordered it (burgundy with red leather). My friend would come by my parent's home many Saturdays in the early years of its life and we would take it to the local Benz store to be washed then enjoy a nice Saturday drive in the clean car. This car sealed the deal on my life long Mercedes addiction. It was always owned by his parents until 2 years ago when the Father sold it to his daughter. The car is just stunning and has only 72,000 miles. Complete service history etc... It does need a few typical fixed (window regulator, hood pad etc)... will be looking on here for help with that and a few other minor things... Will post pics when I get home... Happy 4th!!

Is the maintenance all up to date on it? Will be important to find out when the brake flush and coolant service were last done and that the coolant is an approved coolant. Also the trans fluid and filter. Sounds like a good catch. dare I ask what you paid for it?
Gilly

It has new radiator, a/c compressor, shocks and had a recent oil/filter. I am going to have my mechanic go over it and the records and bring whatever is needed up to date so I have a good benchmark starting point - the previous owner was very good about maintenance. I am realistic that something will need to be addressed - it is almost 30 years old after all!

Make sure the timing chain guide rails have been done.
Despite the low miles, most if not all of the rubber is going to be bad on the car. Hopefully the intake manifold has been resealed, that is a trouble spot on the M116/7s. I am doing this currently on the 560. I really like 420s for the money. Less crap to fail than the 560, far more power than the 300SEL, and decent fuel economy. Enjoy it!
