How to remove instrument cluster.

I have had numerous requests for the proceedure on how to remove the instrument cluster. So here it is for everyone to see in living color.

1. Make of buy special tool. You can make one out of a stiff wire like a coat hanger.

2. Bend end as shown.

3. Insert between cluster and dash at the appropriate location.

4. Rotate tool 90 degrees in the right direction.

5. Pull cluster out.

See attached photos for details.

Thumbs up

Thanks.

So if I understand this correctly you don't actually unclip anything just use the tools to pull the cluster out? Do you need to remove the steering wheel to replace the instrument bulbs? I assume that if I am careful I can do this without removing the steering wheel.

You have to pull out floor mat and unclip the speedo cable next to the steering column or you won't be able to pull the cluster far enough to unscrew it from the back. Also, before disconnecting the battery, extend the steering column all the out to get clearance to remove the cluster. This does not apply to cars with electronic speedometers.

I have a 1996 (W210) E320, there is no speedo cable to disconnect; it was all electric.

Even though I had "prior knowledge" on this procedure , the Photos provide extra information and a sense of security for the average D.I.Y kind of guy. Will file these instructions away for future need.

Thank You.
