My 1991 MBZ has been driven for a short distance of 458k miles and the check engine light has come on thus indicating code 17. Whunter was an excellent resource.
I believed it could have been the O2 sensor, subsequently, I changed the Idle Control Valve, Injector Fuel Distributor. I even checked the hoses and I also changed the air pump in the past but to no avail the light is still luminescent. Guys, I need your help. Thanks

So did you change the O2 sensor or not? The O2 sensor should have been done nearly 8 times over that mileage at factory spec. It's really cheap if you splice in a '90 Mustang GT O2 sensor Bosch part# 13953 (available at ANY parts store) for around $40, as opposed to the factory sensor @ $100.

I'd just like to point out that 458,000 miles is incredible and you are to be congratulated for maintaining the vehicle to this mileage.
What kind of repairs / reconditioning have you had to do?

I think more folks might want to know how you got it up to 458K!!! Agree with the 02 Sensor...I spliced mine in and it was easy but with that mileage I'm in the dark.

Thanks Guys- Sptt, Suginami, JohnM, Oldsinner111, engatwork,
As you may already know the 458k miles means I love to drive. The work performed from 1991 meant I only utilize authorized MBZ shops for service. Of the 21 years in service the last 7 years required very little service - merely oil changes etc. and yes I still have the original engine. This is the first time the check eng. light code 17 has blink thus indicating O2 sensor. I changed the O2 sensor but that was not the problem. I recently had the vehicle service and the findings suggest to change the original Fuel distributor, Regulator and Fuel filter. Thanks again Moderators and Guys.

Code 17
I hace a 91 300e with 270k on the clock. I have had the code 17 problem for a while. It seemed like a vacuum leak because the lambda would indicate lean when you ran from idle to 2000 rpm(lambda would be around 60 at idle and do to 75 or so as you ran rpm up to 2000 or so. O2sensor measured fine but changed it anyway. What seems to have fixed it was replacing the rubber boot between the air housing and intake manifold, the o ring between the fuel injection octopus and the air intake housing and the seal in the fuel injection octopus for the plunger. If you change this seal measure carefully and get the part from dealer it is not an o ring it has a shoulder on it.also if you haven't already change the hoses from the air duct boot to the cold start valve. All these rubber parts dry out with time and may not seal completely and cause vacuum leak. Also check injector seals

I've seen this same problem on a friends 90' 300E, 2.6. Light had been on for years w/ no resolution after replacing the O2 sensor. Only after having to replace the EHA valve because it was leaking did the light finally clear and never come back.

May I suggest that after you put that many miles on it it can still give the o2 as the trouble, why? because of the cat. It proubly has seen its life span by now. just a thought. JNT
