I don't see anything in the pics that would make the car undrivable, some of the damage in the last pic looks old. ( Scrape marks )

Not all under car plastic is $ when purchased new, price out at a dealer first.

That's probably what I will do. See if I can source used stuff after harvest. I just figured I could let the insurance company pay for it. I figure i might sell it after I fix it. The s320 is still selling for close to what I paid for mine 5-6 years ago. And I want something more efficient on fuel because I do tend to drive long distances a lot and I want a safe car as well... a diesel would be great, as I love diesel as well.

On the e300d how does one check the glow plugs? Does the light not come on if all are not functioning?

Ya, the scrape marks are old... but the shattered bumper is new. There weren't previous cracks in it, now there are 3. The plastics wheel liner is about $180, but the under pans are about $500+ a piece.
insurance wrote off my friend's Subaru for a door ding that wouldn't allow the door to close. He bought it back and bolted a scrap yard door onto it, got a salvage title for it, and drove it again. Cost him $200.
The Mercedes is perfectly drivable. Might need a wheel alignment and I wonder if the rim isn't bent a little... problem with insurance is the repair companies try to take them for all they're worth, and so cars like this get written off. found a car that looks to have a good front bumper on ebay thats being parted out. Might be able to get the pans as well.

Yes. Basically glow plugs wouldn't leave you stranded. The GPR would (glow plug relay).

Why sell a car that you are used to and know its faults for such minor damage?

However if this is just the chance/justification for you to get a change in cars that you wanted anyways, I say go for it

It more made me take stock of things. I have been looking for a more fuel efficient car for a while now, but I thought I'd keep the s320 as a touring car, and get a small economy car for running around. But now that I have a gf with no driving record, I'm kinda looking for the best of both world. If I have 2 cars, I'll pay $1000 for mine with full coverage, and $900 liability on the other one so she can drive. So, looking for one car that both feels solid like a tank, but gets great economy. E300d looks like it woudl fit the bill.
Right now, I spend about $120 to drive 1000 km. (about 630 miles). The diesel would probably do the 1000 km for about $65, diesel being cheaper than gas right now anyways. I do a lot of driving, and a trip to the nearest city was costing me $40-$45. Gas (esp Premuim) is ****ty locally, but the diesel is pretty good. They store the diesel a lot less longer than the premium gas so it's fresher. I was having to drive an hour one way to get gas that wasn't clogging fuel filters every 3-4 fills. That cost about $26-$28. It's just more inconvenient to have the gas car right now... Nice and beautiful as it is to drive... I had an offer to buy it a few days before the damage. I'm thinking I might take the offer. The S320 is selling in my area for about $8k for one with a bad ac evaporator... Thinking I might come out ahead in this deal... Just a few little things to fix other than the apparent damage...

$8000 for an S320 with an AC Evap? That's a $1000 job with removing the dash. Don't pay any more than $4500 for that car unless you do the job yourself.

Be the insurance company buying it, not me... heard the evap job was $3000+ in Canada... $130/ hour shop rates... and they seem to make their times up as they go....

So, the car I want to look at is a red with Greg interior e300d of 97 vintage. Has 135,000 miles on it. Guy is asking $7200 for it. Looks great in the pics. The add says everything is working in it. Sound like a good deal. Might be able to get the guy to throw in his spare rims and tires too....

Yeah!!!

Fuel economy, torque and range RULE!!!

Longevity, durability, parts availability, build quality, comfort, prestige and SAFETY of the Mercedes Benz probably won't hurt your feelings too much either....

If the car is good as he says, go for it.
