It's actually a 2.9, not sure if it'll make a difference though. What's heavier? A W140 or a G-Wagen? The 2.9L 602 powered the G-Wagen... so i'm good off-road.

Make sure you can remove the oil filter cover. If not, look for a 603.960 or 603.971 cover. I suppose there are other models with a separate center post.

Cool - the 2.9L should be a little better, as the 2.5L was kinda wimpy, even in the smaller/lighter 124 chassis. Not sure about weights between the Gwagen and W140, but I bet the Gwagen had lower gearing.

Speaking of gearing... what transmission will you use with the diesel? The gasser transmissions are set to upshift over 6000rpm at full throttle, which will be an issue with the diesel limited to ~5krpm.

I'm using the tranny that came with the 2.8L M104... What should I expect in terms of performance? Any way I can compensate? As far as the drivetrain is concerned I'm pretty much re-using everything.

After 3 years!!!!! It finally moves on its own power!!!

Fuel was supplied through a bottle as the tank isn't yet ready, the glow plugs and starter were connected directly to the battery.

Seeing the car move a few feet forward and reverse with it's new engine and overhauled tranny is quite an experience! I feel like I have a brand new car!

Next step is hooking up the starter to the ignition switch, as well as a kill switch and a glow plug relay/timer.

This thread - 380SL Diesel Conversion Project - has info on engine shut-off and a glow circuit. I'm not keen on DIY glow relays since OE relays are easy to come by and very reliable. I'm partial to afterglow relays with more sophisticated temperature logic (quicker glow light on a warm engine) and of course afterglow, but I can't imagine afterglow is a big benefit where you are.

Do the M104 alternator, power steering pump and AC compressor bolt to the 602 as is? IIRC the M104 pulleys have one more groove than the 601/2/3 pulleys.

What are you going to do about the tach?

Yeah, I can get a korean glow relay pretty cheap. The guys that installed my engine also did a gasser w140 to 603 swap, they say they used an electric vacuum thingy, (I think it's the overboost solenoid) to make a shut off system.

I'm not sure about the alternator, but the power steering pump mounting is different, and the compressor is a bit too long. I'm going to use the accessories that came with the engine. The power steering is hooked up already and is working just fine. Still gotta check the compressor. The alternator is probably fine too, easy to refurb.

I plan on using a gauge cluster off a 124, gutting the innards and placing them on the 140 cluster. Haven't gotten there yet but I may be able to re-use the 140 gauge faces and lighting. Calibration may be off but as long as the gauges move.

Any suggestions about the gauge cluster? ALL the modules on the passenger side have been removed. So anything that has to do with them is pretty much never going to be utilized.
Surprisingly the modules in the fuse box still work. (headlamp and wiper modules) The only thing that got trashed was the aux fan relay and the convenience module in the trunk, and of course the 2 seat control modules.

Thanks for the link, will read up on it.
