Which M119 timing chain guide rails should I replace?
I am ready to do the timing chain replacement on my 92 400E, before I order parts, I am not quite sure which guide rails I should replace along with the chain and tensioner. From Fast lane catalog I see 7 kinds of the guide rails:
1. At chain tensioner 2. Right, on cylinder head bearing cap 3. Cylinder head inside left and right 4. Cylinder head Outer left 5. Left, on cylinder head bearing cap 6. Timing guide rail Left&Right 7. Crankcase Left Can anybody suggest which I should replace? Thanks a lot.

Rails
I had the timing chain rails break on my 92 500SEL which shares the same engine. I was told that they were made of plastic and that they had broken into small pieces which fell to the bottom of the engine into the oil pan. I noticed that the oil pressure was not acting right when it fluctuated between 0 and 3 during acceleration. It was lucky that I did because the broken pieces of plastic in the oil pan were being sucked up against the screen of the oil pump which restricted the flow of the oil to the engine. If I would not have noticed the problem, I could have done more damage to the engine by depriving it of oil. When I it fixed I told them to replace all that was broken or possibly braking in the near future (car had 90K), this is the listing:

Thank you for your helps, Fred and Micheal,
I've got to have it done ASAP, it has 210k km (130k miles), I don't even know the timing chain is orignal or not, ItalianBenz's thread scared me stiff

I had already bought the top guides (as shown in your other post) and was going to swap them last night, when I noticed one of the other chain rails inside the cylinder head was broken (see attached photo). Problem is, there isn't a procedure in the FSM or WIS showing how to replace those rails in the cylinder head (there are three of them - two on driver side, one on passenger side). Looks like the cam adjuster has to come out to do this - ugh! The ones I need to replace are shown in this PDF file, section B (page 2), guide numberrs 8, 14, and 26. |
