Sta-Bil

I don't want to start a snake oil debate or gas debate but would like your comments about something. Years ago, my 84 500SEL would get 20+mpg on long interstate trips. It started dropping about mid 2000 to +/-18 mpg or so doing the same type of driving. I finally realized that it was the ethanol in the fuel that made it drop. I started using ethanol-free gas and the mileage went back to the 20 mpg range. A few month ago, we took a trip from NC to Maine (2400 miles round trip) Searching out ethanol-free gas was a problem. We had just gotten an Exxon card that we got $.15 per gallon rebate so I used it for the trip. I also started using Sta-Bil Marine fuel treatment. Well, mpg was +/- 20 mpg for the trip. So now I use Exxon regular with ethanol and Stay-Bil.
I keep very accurate records for fuel usage and can see trends over the past 7 years. Would anyone like to comment?

Paul

Look at pure-gas.org and choose your state. There are quite a few. The gas is more expensive but in these older cars the cost per mile is about the same.

In large Metro areas with SMOG testing, those ethanol free stations do not exist!

My truck does get 12% better mileage with ethanol free fuel.

It's interesting that my 500SEL gets 10% lower mileage on 10% ethanol gas. Soooooo the ethanol does nothing in my car. On a 2000 mile trip I would use 111 gal of 10% ethanol gas. Same 2000 miles on non ethanol gas I would use 100 gal. The eleven gal of ethanol just goes out the tail pipe only stopping long enough to corrode or damage something and INCREASE the emissions.
I still can't explain the 20 mpg using Exxon and Sta-bil.

One needs to look at Btu content to realize that ethanol doesn't have as many Btus as gasoline. In order of Btu's per gallon:
153,000 #6 Fuel oil
130,000 Butane
114,000 gasoline
112,000 gas and ethanol blend
76,000 ethanol
Forgot to notice where diesel is.

I wish someone could explain to our government that the use of ethanol does not reduce our dependence on foreign oil. The ethanol does not lower emissions. All it does is reduce the amount of money we can keep in our pockets. It helps the oil companies. It helps the distilleries that make the ethanol. It probably helps the bank accounts of the politicians that approved the ethanol being put into our fuel. If I make a 2000 miles trip, I use 200 gal of gas or I use 200 gal of gas AND 11 gal of ethanol. I haven't even brought up the fact that it takes a lot of fuel to make the ethanol. Starting with the equipment on the farm, the trucks that haul the corn, the trucks that haul the ethanol. etc.

Rant over

Diesel is fuel oil with a dye, (usually) or the other way motor fuel has a dye, and most important, diesel fuel has a road tax. But the BTU's are the same.
