If you had the wiring diagram you could check it, if it was a hard failure. Given the circumstances it would be pretty tough. Would have been easier to do some testing before you took it apart but too late now.

What does the Nissan read when it is running??
The MB is too high, or at least I believe if the alternator was checked it would be running too high, when running the alternator should put out 13.8 to 14.2v

If you switch on your headlamps for 10 seconds and switch off then test the voltage it would have dropped.

I have seen this happen on a car I had, the SG of the electrolyte was out of whack, there was more acid than water, some distilled water and placing the battery on a tire to shake it up and put back into the car solved it. In most cases running like that for too long can render a battery completely dead.

I check the SG of the electrolyte every second oil change, I have added about a glass worth of distilled water in 2 years. Still cranks good - I have the white MB battery.

Find a high quality voltmeter to check it against, shouldn't be getting voltages this high.
