Mercon V?

In another thread I mentioned I had a trans leak. It did not dawn to me until today that the trans is filled with Mercon V. The fluid clearly has the sweeter smell of Mercon V versus regular ATF fluid.

Are there any ill effects from using such fluid? Such as a lost reverse?

Ford used to use Mercon in their older transmissions; this fluid was usually sold as Dexron/Mercon in parts stores which would seem to indicate the two were essentially the same. Some years ago Ford dropped the Mercon fluid and told the dealers to use Mercon V in its place. I have never seen a problem caused by using Mercon V in a Mercon/Dexron transmission. In fact, the 722.3 I rebuilt in my own car two years ago got filled with Mercon V and operated just fine.

Your lack of reverse is not fluid related unless it's just plain low on fluid. It's probably the B3 clutch discs coming apart which is a common 722.3 problem. Also could be a cracked B3 piston (part of the front pump assembly). See my reply in your other thread.

Mercon V is a very good synthetic transmission fluid used in Ford products from 2001-present. I have it in my 560SEL and even with the reverse going out on it, the rest of the transmission shifts fine. I would like to point out though that I have noticed my transmission leaking quite alot more now possible due to the new fluid. My trans needs a rebuild anyway so it doesnt bother me. I know it needs to be done soon.

Just do not use Mercon V in the power steering system with old or original parts. I learned the hard way... I had to replace both lines and now still have fluid leaking from the steering box.

My steering box leaks from time to time also. The fluid appeared to be V also.

Its odd that all the parts replaced on this car are genuine Mercedes branded. Yet the fluids never were. Green coolant, etc. I am betting the previous owner had the car for just a short time, before that always treated well at a Benz dealer.

You should be using Valvoline Dex/Merc. That stuff you got is for newer cars.
