help! 722.3, no reverse, stuck in second, goes forward in neutrol

Hello, I have a 1989 Porsche 928 S4.

It started out that the vehicle would not go out of second gear and would flare, but the reverse worked.

I drained the fluid, changed filter, cleaned the valve body out, installed shifter kit.

It sounded smoother but nothing changed.
Then I disconnected the bowden cable from the throttle house, it will stay in second and not flare, but reverse does not work, it will go forward in neutrel, and still stays in second. it seems liks 2nd, 2rd, and D selectors are all second gear.

Hrmm.

Not going into reverse might mean B3 piston is bad or something related to it.. B3 is behind the primary pump.

Does the car upshift from 2nd gear? If not, stuck in second gear MIGHT mean you have a governor related issue. Either the governor gear broke or the governor itself is dirty/broke.

Mr 89,

Sadly you need to get into the transmission to at lease fix the reverse, and the inner lip seal is the culprit-very poor design-see post 15-the o-ring on the inside.

no reverse / jerks in reverse when cold - Benzworld.org - Mercedes-Benz Discussion Forum

Your second gear could be a couple of things, but i would guess since you inspected the valvebody. The problem is somewhere else? Probably B1 and B2. Download the Master.pdf from the link above

Have you checked the linkage of the gear selector?

Reverse > neutral
Neutral > drive
Drive > second gear

Yep, to me it sounds like the linkage should be checked out first if it's going forward in N. I don't know how you could tell if a valve body is bad by looking at it. But I bet there are hundreds of dead 560's with valve bodies that you can steal for extermination.

Also, as you indicated flaring, do you know if the vacuum modulator is good? If not, it will cause shift flairs.

Sounds like a shift linkage problem at first, what position of the lever does the engine start?

loraine it used the mercedes transmission, i tried tigheting up the selector level a little it seems loose, did nothing. I am going to try adjusting it one more time. I put the selector all the way toward the back so it would be in park. Clicked it twice and recconected it after the selector was in nuetrol. I am going to try and do this again.

if the transmission is one of those that start out in second gear and it wont shift past that I would suspect the governor,

If you got first that shifts into second gear but cant get into any of the higher gears, maybe check the b2 piston.

b3 is for reverse i think

google "atsg 722.3" and you'll find a service manual pdf for the 722.3/4 series transmissions. at the end of it you'll find a troubleshooting guide that might prove helpful

Did you ever find out the problem?

I suspect the governor.
But the only way to find out is either pull the gov'
or it wont show up in the fluid in the pan.
You have to pull the plate between the front valve body
and also pull the rear valve body to get the plate off.

I've read were (after pulling those), a forum member,
pulled two small thimble looking screens from the rear valve body
and one was clogged.
And that solve his shifting problem.

But if you find long thing shavings once you drop that plate
then it's likely from the gears of the gov'.

I think you can partial drop the tranny (referring to MBZ not sure about Porsche) to pull the gov.

You may also have to remove the tail section of the tranny
to replace the other heli gear that goes on the main shaft.
Typically it damages both gears not just the gov.
