400E at 275,000 miles

I recently rolled over to 275,000 miles in my '92 400E, which I've owned since 2004. I've been through a lot with this car, and feel like I know it personally since I've always done the work on it myself. Over the years I've replaced the wiring harness, replaced the gas tank after it cracked and leaked, rebuilt the suspension, replaced the timing chain and tensioners, rebuilt the trans valve body, rebuilt the power steering pump, and all the other normal maintenance stuff. It's a fantastic car that has never once left me stranded. It still gets compliments. And at 275,000 miles, it still inspires confidence at high (100+ mph) speeds.

Just wanted to say thanks to this forum and all the fellow enthusiasts for the helpful information over the years.

I'll make another post when I hit 300,000 in a couple years! (knock on wood)

It's great to see a gasser go with the reliability of a diesel. Merc gas engines are very underrated.

Lego---,
At what mileage did you replace your chain tensioners? I have a '95 E420 with 128K.
And you are right, the 400 series is the greatest car I have ever driven. Looking at a '95 S500 coupe this week to add to the V-8 garage!

Congrats. The gassers do indeed last just as long, just need a little more maintenance. My 300E only has 163k but runs great....my dad's 420 has 302,000+ original miles on the engine, it had a head job about 90k ago I believe. Runs great.

I replaced the chain guides at 210,000 miles. I was starting to get some slapping noises, and when I dropped the oil pan, I found shattered pieces of the guides. I wouldn't worry about tearing into the engine until you get the symptoms. All the research I had done on the subject said that actual failure of the timing chain and subsequent engine damage is unheard of.

And just to prove that your 400E isn't alone in it's durability, my 92 400E just passed 275,000 miles as well. I've only had it a year, but I have rebuilt the upper wiring harness, put in new struts, and at present I am rebuilding/resealing the power steering system (what a job!). Always great to hear about exceptional mileage on a Mercedes-Benz.
