power steering assist adjustment
Is there any way to adjust the power steering assist? I know some cars have variable assist steering. Is there any way to replace this, as it is often too light? For example I noticed that the new Chrysler 300M special edition has a 17:1 steering assist, while the standard model has variable assist, which is more assisted.

In almost all cases the answer is no. Unless you can write computer code & re-flash the controling computer. The variable steering has pre-set parameters.

A smaller power steering pump pulley? Make sure you don't over rev the pump.

You mean a larger pulley, don't you?
That would make the pump turn more slowly and reduce pressure, wouldn't it? But I don't think you could reduce the pressure enough to matter much that way.
My '83 Toyota Celica has a little white knob on top of the valve cover which adjusts the vacuum signal to a valve on the ps pump which tells the pump whether the engine is turning fast or not -- faster revs gives less ps boost, for highway road feel, lower gives more, for parking, and you just turn the white knob to whatever level you prefer. But that car doesn't really even need ps anyway! |

Oh, too light. I thought he wanted more assist. For less assist I would have said a larger pulley. If that doesn't work, maybe a smaller steering wheel?
