420 SEL Just Got Rear Ended and Now it Won't Start

My 1991 Mercedes 420 SEL with 560 motor was hit last night in the rear. The car ran after the accident and I was able to pull it over to the side of the road. After sitting for a while sorting out the accident information, I tried to restart the car. It ran briefly and then cut out. I tried to restart it a number of times and it would briefly start for a second and then die. I had to have it towed because the battery started to run down. I can hear the fuel pump running when I turn the key. Any thoughts as to what could cause this? Thanks.

The car did not sustain serious damage - mainly cosmetic (scuffed bumper, hairline cracks in the tail lights, bent muffler). I was thinking that it mak have dislodged something that clogged the fuel filter or that the fuel pump may have sustained some sort of damage even though it is still making noise. Any other possibilities?

i had a ford truck that was doing something similar. would run but die if you got up over 30mph. used it for plowing my driveway so i didn't care as it would run good at low speeds. ended up being a break in the fuel line that worsened to the point that it would not start. even a minor impact could do that.

You mentioned "bent muffler". Could it be bent enough to restrict the exhaust flow? If the exhaust can not get out, they may start and run with reduced power, not start at all, or anywhere in between.

it does not look as though it is bent enough to restrict exhaust flow but could be... I will take a look tomorrow.
