722.6 Transmission Fluid Question
So I checked the fluid that is/was still in my transmission I pulled for my project and this is what I've got
![]() The pink is of course brand new.....I'm guessing the yellow/brown is not a good sign and I should probably bring the transmission back to the junk yard for store credit and try my luck with another? I believe these transmissions used a synthetic "lifetime" fluid. It may or may not be the same color as regular ATF |

It can get that sort of a yellowish look, that is fine. You can go by smell also, just like any other trans, if it smells burnt it is burnt.

Probably not a problem. The dye used fades with time. MB increased the amount of dye at one point. I noticed mine had turned brown after about 5K miles. I'd be more inclined to check the bottom of the pan for any residue. Small grit is okay but large pieces of graphite or metal (aluminum or brass) are a bad sign.

I pulled the pan and it had a film of clutch material. I'd assume to be normal. No chunks or shavings to be found.
Maybe the car I got it from was sent to the yard for engine issues or maybe the conductor plate died. Anyway to test that the conductor plate is good? |

Good news.
I don't have a procedure for checking conductor plate issues. Check the shop procedures at this site and in the W210 forum at benzworld.org. I seem to recall there are procedures for replacement.

The 722.6 uses graphite in the clutches. Normal wear causes the fluid to turn brown, then black. I've seen it inky black, like oil from a diesel, and there was no problem with the transmission. So don't read anything into the color in your photo.

Very interesting.
I'll look into the conductor plate stuff and see if I can test it. |

Here is a post I made quite awhile ago in regards to the 722.6 and the fluid:

The fine layer of metallic sludge worries me. It wasn't thick, just a fine layer of it and built up more in the corners of the pan.

I serviced mine at about 120K and it sounds like it looked the same as yours. A thin film with a little grit. Car continues to shift very smoothly.

Oh there should be a magnet in the bottom of the pan (if there isn't, MB wants it put in when the pan is down) and also caps on top of the solenoids was another addition.

I wish I had read this last week. I serviced a 2000 C280 transmission (130k miles) this past weekend that had never been serviced and could easily have put a magnet in there. I will keep this in mind from here on. thanks
