1995 E320 OIL IN COOLANT TANK
I was checking over the car under the hood , I have had it for 4 weeks , everything is nice and clean , the car has been well cared for ,the coolant overflow tank was not very clear and I dropped a rag into the coolant and there was an obvious oil on top, the ar runs perfect and I was wondering if there is anywhere else the oil could come from other than the headgasket any ideas thanks

If it's definitely motor oil, then either the gasket or the head itself. Unless it has had either of these replaced recently, because if that's the case they might not have cleaned out the system very well, or not seen to it that the pressure tank was cleaned or replaced or the overflow tank was not cleaned or replaced.

I thought I would put in a new coolant tank and watch what happens ,I was hoping the job was done and just not cleaned properly

^2 if that is the case they should have replaced all the rubber hoses too.

Start the car and before it gets warm remove the cap from the coolant tank; if the cap blows off you have compression (and oil) going into the cooling system. on the bright side, i drove my 300se like that fro 33k miles and it was still going strong and my 87 300d is doing it for a while now ans never overheats or anything

Marine bilge cleaner is a good way to clean out the oil, just add it to the coolant and run it, then drain and refill with water and more bilge cleaner, then flush that and should be ok for coolant. Don't forget the expansion tank, if that has oil in it it will just get reindroduced to the system later. That one isn't easily cleaned, and there isn't much to it so I think is cheaper than the pressure tank.

thanks for the info I have ordered a new overflow tank and will replace it on the weekend and keep and eye on it ,i do remember once checking a headgasket by submersing the over flow line into a bottle of water and if there were air bubbles you have a bad gasket or head I will try this as well
