Replacement 300D Fog Light Options?

I am looking to replace my broken fog light housings on my 85 300d. It would be kind of cool to replace them with something similar. But, I really don't want to replace them with super expensive new housings, or faded used housings. I was thinking of just installing some sealed low beams in their place. What do you guys think? What works well?

Thanks,
Mike

You could replace them with euro assemblies:

Do you know if they have the left hand drive light cut off? Are they a direct bolt on?

I am not sure what you mean by left hand drive cut off. Do you mean light patterns? I believe they do. I have never had any problem with the euro style headlamps I've bought from "gummysource." I have three of four sets from him.

Bolt on yes, You will need a wiring adaptor, which is pretty simple. It's part# 011 545 50 28. You'll need two.

Yeah, the light pattern. I have heard that they are different between left hand and right hand drive - just didn't want to blind people. They look good. This gives me a good option. Thank you!

I still need to diag my cruise control so that I can get with you on a repair if necessary. I ended up finding some rust and have completely gutted the interior of the car, with the exception of the drivers seat and dash.

Will regular low beams fit directly in the fog light location? I have seen some pics of clear fog lights.

Regular high/low beams in the normal fog light housings that came on the car. I like the look of the euros, but I kind of like the round headlights too...

I know what you're asking, yes small round headlamps will fit in the fog location HOWEVER you need to index the metal backing plate for the light so the mounting tabs meet up and keep the lense level, the fog light mounting tabs are different by about 30 degrees, same spacing for the tabs. I am going to install some nice H1 bulb high beams in place of the fog lights, with relays etc and add some Bosch fogs below the front bumper still using the factory headlight switch. I will post a pic with the high beam conversion and indexing of the backing plate once attempted later this week, it is easily done I have worked on a few with this modification. I love the eurolights, however just more then I can budget and am already sitting on the other parts off old cars I used to own.
Just so you know it is illegal to run more then two low beam headlights in north america, the extra light source can only be fogs or high beams for a max of 4 lights nothing more.

Good info. I may have to remove one of the fog lights so that I can see what the indexing looks like. I wonder if it would be better to get the conversion high or low beam housings so that yellow bulbs could be installed which may look more "legal" to run with the regular headlights.

The other thought is using an H4 low beam light and then putting all the H4 bulbs into that have a burnt low beam, high beam never burns out in them...
By indexing I mean rotating the back plate, finally thought of the correct wording!

The back plate on the light housing gets rotated, or the bracket on the car?

I think the easiest thing to do is take a high beam round headlight bucket and swap it over (say from w116). I read that the hole in the fog light bucket is too small and needs to be made bigger, as well as rotating the backing so it is aligned correctly. Just the part that holds the light itself, it is mounted in two screws and a spring (adjusters). The Bosch fogs are no discountinued, only what remains in warehouses is left! They had yellow from 1980 and clear (white) before then.
