1987 300E Ignition Switch or Tumbler? Problem
Today something odd happened when I turned off my 1987 300E, not sure what I did or what the sequence was but after turning off the car and removing the key from the ignition, when I went to open the door the door buzzer buzzes. I also noticed that the steering wheel does not lock with the key out. It seems like the ignition assembly thinks that the key is still in the tumbler.
I can still start and drive the car its just tha the door buzzer buzzes when I open the drivers door with the key out of the ignition, I also noticed that the steering wheel doesn't lock when I remove the key ( I'm repeating what I mentioned above). Thanks! |

Ignition tumbler probably didn't turn far enough to disengage, but probably went far enough to allow the key to slide out from the ignition. A new ignition and tumbler with a set of keys is pretty cheap. Best to replace it now before 1) you're key gets stuck and you can't get it out. 2) You get the key in and it won't turn and then you can't get it out. 3)You can't even get the key in to the ignition at the most inconvenient time and place. 4) You get abducted by aliens.
Do a search to see how to remove the ignition lock and tumbler to replace it.
