1989 19E Aux Fan
Does anyone know where I can out find to replace an aux fan on a 1989 190e?
I would not call myself an auto mechanic - I can barely change the oil. I took the car to a mechanic, and his quote is more than I can pay right now. I know I can buy the parts cheaper here than what he quoted. I did pay him for diagnosis, so I know what the problem is. 1. Fuse bad, replaced. It has since blown again. 2. One fan not at full speed, one fan not working at all. 3. From this, I assume the partially operational fan caused the fuse to blow. Plan: 1. Replace fuse 2. Replace partially operational fan with new fan. If I can get that far, then I know I can fix the second fan. Questions: Which fuse? (Tach and temp sensor OK) Does anyone know where I can find instructions on how to replace fan? How hard is it to replace? I can see only one screw and I know there must be more. Thanks |

Fan is probably blowing a fuse because there is a shortage in the wiring somewhere. Check the wires first. Visually inspect them for wear. As fas as one fan not at full speed....the fans have 2 speeds: high and low. It will only reach full speed if the temperature of the car reaches about 105*C. To test that the high speed fan is working, unplug the coolant temp sensor located on the engine block top driver side, should be a blue two prong plug "on" the aluminum part of the engine block

Search threads started by me. That should get you started as I replaced/rebuilt my auxillary fans recently. You will also find a lot of other information with a general search on the subject.
You have to remove the upper radiator support piece and the vertical support tube and four radial screws that secure the fan frame circumference to the chassis. Then you remove the entire frame/fans as an assembly and go from there to replace or overhaul the fans. If I had to do it again I would remove the front bumper first - four nuts on the frame horns plus the brackets in the fender wells that support the bumper surround. That makes the lower radial screws much easier to access. You can remove them without removing the bumper, but I found it impossible to install them without removing the bumper. Total cost was about 20 bucks for one boneyard fan motor. Duke |

I guess the information was already here. I just couldn't find it. Now that I have a pretty good idea about what I need to do, I need to decide if I am up to the project. Duke2.6, did you remove the wheels before taking of the bumper? It looks pretty tight in there with the wheels on. |

No, but I have 205/55ZR-15 tires, which are a little shorter than the OE 185/65s, so there was plenty or room to get the bumper surround bracket screw off without jacking the car up or removing the wheels.

possible to do without removing the bumper
theres only about 4 screws holding on aux fan bracket. Maybe takes 20 - 30 mins to remove fans I think. Undo radiator bracket gives you room to tilt radiator back when pulling fans. Fan bracket is held in place by 4 philips screws I think.
