117 Intake Manifolds

Greeting Forum Members,

The intake manifold from my 1973 450sl is not sealing my rebuilt heads from a 1975 450sl. The 1975 heads have a channnel runnning just below the intake ports that the 1973 heads don't have. I installed the gasket from the 1973 gasket kit. I'm thinking that I should be using the different designed 1975 gasket. Are the1973 & 1975 intake manifolds different?
Thanks in advance for any help with this.

Knarf

The 117.982 (D-Jetronic, up to 10/1975) and 117.985 (KA-Jetronic, from 11/1975) have different intake manifolds.

Ciao!

Given that the change from D-jet to K-jet occured in late 1975 (for the 1976 model year USA delivery) it seems that there is a possibility that the 1975 heads which you received were made for a K-jet engine.

While you had the engine apart did you take any pictures of the heads?
One way to tell the difference is by the pedestals on which the rocker arms pivot. If the heads were made for D-jet they will have manually adjustable pedestals for valve clearance; if for K-jet the pedestals will be hydraulic with no means of adjustment. This assumes that the heads which you installed were obtained complete with cams, bearing stands, rockers, pedestals, valves, springs, etc.

Hi Frank,

Yes Frank the heads were recieved complete.
I was told that the heads I purchased were from a 1975 450sl.
They do have manually adjustable valves.
The dfference in the heads I purchased and the heads on the
car is the added air chamber running horizontally under the valve ports.
The intake manifold from the car does not cover it when installed.
Were there 2 different intake manifold and head designs for the Mercedes d-jet fuel injection systems? I have since resolved the problem by having the original heads machined and installed. But the question still remains unanswered and I have set of machined heads without a matching intake manifold .
