Belt Tensioner quick fix for my W124 3.0L 300E 1990

DEAR SRS, TWO WEEKS AGO THE BELT TENSIONER ON MY 1990 300E 3.0 FAILED, I CAN'T AFFORD THE NEW BELT TENSIONER, SO I MADE A "MEXICAN REPAIR" FOR LESS THAN $3 DLLS.
I KNOW THAT THIS FORUM IS HOSTED BY A PARTS SUPPLY COMPANY, SO THEY WON'T LIKE THE IDEA OF LOOSING A POTENTIAL SALE WITH REPAIRS LIKE THE ONE I MADE.
CAN I PUBLISH THE REPAIR AND PICTURES WITHOUT BEING SANCTIONED BY THE MODERATORS?

BEST REGARDS

I think you ought to show it just because if someone ever needs to make a repair to the belt tensioner without being able to wait on the correct part.

Oh yea, turn all caps off.

Yeah! While we're hosted by Pelican, posts detailing DIY or get-around fixes are always welcomed .

This thread brought to you by the stuck shift button ($3 Mexican fix keyboard?). Anyways it might get someone out of a jam on the side of the road so I'd be all for it.

BELT TENSIONER QUICK FIX FOR W124 3.0L 300E 1990

A COUPLE WEEKS AGO THE BELT TENSIONER ON MY CAR FAILED, I COULDN'T GET A REPLACEMENT SOON, SO I MADE A QUICK AND VERY ECONOMICAL REPAIR.

ALL YOU NEED IS A PIECE OF 1/2" DIAMETER THREADED ROD ABOUT 14 INCHES LONG, 2 WASHERS, 2 NUTS , A DRILL AND A GRINDER.

1 - GRIND ABOUT 2" IN ONE END OF THE ROD, SO IT BECOMES FLAT.

2 - DRILL A 5/16" HOLE NEAR THE END.

3 - REMOVE THE BELT TENSIONER SHOCK ABSORBER

4 - INSTALL THE THREADED ROD IN THE SHOCK ABSORBER MOUNTING HOLE, USING THE SAME BOLT.

5 - DRIVE (BY HAND) ONE OF THE NUTS AND ANE WASHER ABOUT 3" INTO THE THREADED ROD.

6 -THERE IS A PIECE (WHICH I DON'T KNOW WHAT IS IT FOR AT THE LEFT OF THE ENGINE, NEAR THE DISTRIBUTOR, REMOVE THIS PIECE AND INSTALL IT AS SHOWN ON THE PICTURE.

7 - INSTALL THE OTHER WASHER AND NUT INTO THE THREADED ROD.

8 - REPLACE PULLEYS, BELTS, ETC.

9 - TIGHTEN THE BELT BY TURNING THE NUTS UNTIL THE BELT GETS THE DESIRED TENSION, DON'T OVER TIGHTEN BECAUSE IT WILL LEAD TO WATER PUMP OR ALTERNATOR BEARING DAMAGE.

10 - FINALLE, THIGTEN THE OTHER NUT SO IT LOCKS THE FIRST ONE.

SEE ATTACHED PICTURE.

** FOR THE PROCEDURE OF REMOVING FAN AND PULLEYS, SEE TECH INFO CENTER, THEY HAVE AN EXCELLENT STEP BY STEP, FULLY ILLUSTRATED GUIDE.

Yes. DIY repairs using whats around the shop is fabulous. Although typing in all caps is typically considered yelling. So, take caps lock off and hit the shift key occasionally.

Welcome!

Sorry for YELLING, I did not mean to do so, I use caps lock all the time because letters are bigger and easier to read.

click the "Ctrl" key and roll the wheel on your mouse forward. That zooms most windows internet browsers.
