Need Help Replacing water pump on 1998 e320
Water pump leaks on my 1998 e320 and to be honest, I have no idea what to do next.
So far, I've drained the radiator, removed the fan and it's shroud. But that's it. How does one remove the viscous fan clutch? What about the Serpentine belt? Where the heck is the water pump anyway? There's alot of things in the way. HELP

I found the Pelican article for the W203, but I have my first snag,,,
Looks like I either need a special tool or drill a hole into one of my torx (hardened metal) sockets

You don't want to take that torx out, the whole clutch assbly threads onto the water pump pulley. You hold the pulley and turn the 36mm hex counter clockwise. Hard to do without the proper tools

Your serpetine belt tensioner has a 17mm hex cast into it - use a socket on it and rotate it so the belt releases - then use a 4 or 5mm allen wrench and insert it between the two halves of the tensioner (its a bit on the lower side) and it will lock the tensioner in service position.
Do not try to undo that torx screw in the tensioner. to undo the fan you need a big wrench to undo the big nut from the water pump shaft - after the fan is removed you can see the entire water pump and pulley, undo all bolts and remove. You might want to double check what you have ordered - there are several mutants of this engine and some have an oil cooler on the oil filter mount. Engines with those coolers would have an additional hole in the water pump.

TY,
Yes I have the oil cooler. But now I'm not so sure the water pump is leaking. I pulled the fan off and hooked up the hoses and got the car up to temp, but no leak. The PO let the serpentine belt shred on him, which took out the hose from the WP to the aux WP. He took some heater hose and a piece of PVC and clamped the heater hose to a portion of the molded hose. at first I saw that so I replaced the hoses. but I still had a puddle. The puddle was on the left side of the engine, which doesn't point to water pump, at least I don't think. I know I need a viscous fan clutch and I'm hoping the one I ordered from Peachparts arrives tomorrow. I located the 17mm but cannot locate the hole to put the tensioner in service mode. Will continue to look.

Check out the pdf attached to this post at benzworld. It shows it with pictures.
water pump torque values - Mercedes-Benz Forum It's for an ML, but same engine, pump and process. Also, you only need to put the pin in the hole if you are going to remove the tensioner, otherwise you just need to release the tension on the belt so you can remove it. Hope that helps. |
