Checking codes?? 92 sl500

I'm not a mechanic but fairly mechanical. Can I check my codes without special tools?

Yes, there is a diagram for a simple LED / resistor / switch / 3 wires tester somewhere, I don't have a copy handy.

There are a few systems ( engine, trans control, top , ) and each one gets checked by it's self.

A schematic and parts list here shows one that you can build to read stored codes.
