W220 key or ignition switch
I am trying to determine if I have a bad key or ignition switch. I started the car and it shut off right away. Since then the key doesn't turn in the ignition. I've read about bad keys and bad ignition switches, but has anyone seen this happen like that? I don't have a spare key to test it with. I am contemplating buying one to see but some have said once you change the switch you need a new key anyway. I don't want to buy a new key only to replace the switch and buy another new key. Thanks in advance, you guys are awesome

The key you need to buy with the new EIS is only for coding the new switch. There's a core charge on the coding key so you have to return it or pay around $200. Makes no sense to keep it as it can't start the car.
Go ahead and get a new key or have a shop run codes to make sure the EIS hasn't failed. Having a spare key is a good idea. Getting stuck someplace because of a bad key sucks. |
