Question C220 parking brake problem

Just changed the rear rotors on my 95' C220D, to find that the parking brake shoes were not the 25mm wide standard shoes listed for pretty well all the Classics. It appears that my rear shoes are the same as a 190 ie 20mm wide. There seems to be an additional small back plate fitted to the main splash guard, which reduces the width for the Parking brake shoe by 5mm.

The narrower shoes are available, but I'm not sure if I should be looking to change to the wider type.
1 What is the reason for this variation?
2 Is there any reason not to change to the wider type shoes, presumably discarding / changing the secondary back plate?

Any info gratefully received, thanks!

Question

I usually try to park on level ground, so it's not really a problem of the brake holding, but I wouldn't like to try stopping with the parking brake alone, nor would I fancy a hill-start with a heavy trailer behind....
I've now managed to source and fit the narrower shoes, but the question still remains, why the reduced width shoes are fitted by MB in the first place?
