Front Strut Mounts
1995 W124 wagon E320 136K mi -
I know I've run across articles/threads on the subject but don't have the time to spend looking for them now. Is there someplace that I can locate kind of a step-by-step read to assist me in this adventure? A few pics thrown in here and there would be nice as well :-)

Can anyone verify the hex size of the shock rod that projects thru the top of the strut mount? It is NOT 8mm....slightly smaller, but I do not have the correct one in my arsenal. Thanks.

I'd spray the backside of the strut mount bolts with rustoleum before install.

PS CarpeDiem: wouldn't anti-sieze work as well?

I meant for rust protection, the "heads" of the carriage bolts are exposed in the wheel well.

Job done. I can undoubtedly make a small job into a monumental task! Ha! Dropped the large bolt that holds the top of the strut rod to the bracket down into the bowels of the area under the brake vac booster. Tried a magnet but noooo. Went to my local MB dealer parts counter...noooooo. Went to the local ACE hardware and thought I found the correct nut size and pitch however I had trouble spinning it on to a bolt of matching threads so I moved on. Went to two auto parts stores, no love. Last store told me to check "K&M Fasteners" some small out of the way old-school shop - not more than a mile and a half from home. Bingo! Ended up being the size/pitch I found at ACE.
It is a fairly simple procedure - 1.5/5. Now I'll wait to see if it makes much difference in handling.

I have dropped my fair share of little bits in the two compartments that you mention - and have the scars to prove it that I removed all of them, Now when Im working near them I cover them with a piece of cloth so nothing drops in. Make sure to clean the areas now and then as leaves, bugs, moss etc can live in there. Also make sure all drains and clean.
You dont want a pond in there either. btw - the strut mounts are pretty easy on a W124 once the strut is out.
