Slime/oil in Collant
I have discovered a brownish/yellow slime or oil in the coolant overflow resevour in my 1992 190E 2.6. It would appear to be oil leaking through from somewhere, however there's no sing of coolant in the oil, either on the dip stick or when drained for changing. Also, it appears that I have an oil leak around the head gasket.
Do these two seem related or could there be another cause for the coolant slime?? |

Totally agree with moedip. Head gasket.
Been there, done that. I postponed the inevitable by adding a radiator/cylinder block fixer to the coolant, but I don't recommend it. Good luck B E200 Wagon 1994 108k miles gasket failed @ 100k miles 200T 1987 gasket failed @ 110k miles. Sold now. |

Thanks for your replys. You have confirmed what I suspected. Next obvious question is, what should I expect to pay to have the head gasket replaced?

A lot
I think $600-$1000 was quoted here at one time. But the thing is while you are in there you might as well go ahead and replace some of the other failure items such as valve guides and/or seals and timing chain rails as a preventive measure. That way you won't have to pay the labor again when those go. Hope this helps... |

What about the timing chain itself? They don't cost too much, do they?

Don't know what timing chains cost. More than one pro here has commented that 103 timing chains don't wear that much if at all.
