Newbie has the fever

Good Day to all,
I wanted to introduce myself, My name is Scott and I have recently purchased my first MB, she is a 1974 240D, she was bought brand new from a local dealership in Aug of 74, and lived her life with one owner about 2 miles from her new garage. (included in with extensive records is the original new car purchace order) She is in respectable shape, body is straight, no rust, needs paint. Interior pretty good, however all the stuffing has deteriorated from the seats, and I want new carpet. She smokes really bad, lots of white smoke, that smells like fuel, from what I have read on here I am suspecting a bad injector. I intend to return her to clean original condition and will no doubt rely heavily on all the experiance and advice from this great forum. Thanks in advance.
I am aware she is SLOW and not particularly 'collectable' but I have caught the fever, I have a feeling this will become a lifetime obsession !!

The fuel control on your diesel is very different than all other auto diesels. The pump has a pneumatic governor rather than mechanical.

Common smoking problems arise from the cracking of two different diaphrams. The diaphram in the rear of the injection pump usually also causes idle surging and probably blacker exhaust. It can be checked by removing the red filter at the rear, top of the injection pump. Place your thumb over the opening and if there is a noticable change in idle speed/condition then you have a bad diaphram.

The other diaphram is in the vacuum pump. Its failure causes oil to pass through the diaphram and on to the runner of number one cylinder. This line is as big as ones finger and if originally clear, it will show the black of oil transfer. If its a black line then removing at the intake is an easy way to view.

Talking Welcome to the forum!

I am not familiar with diesels but I noticed you are from JAX. As you already know this site is second to none.
Maybe we can meet some time and exchange ideas...
