m103 Lower Timing Cover Questions

I ordered a KTC flywheel lock so I'm covered there. Questions:

1. Is there a gasket or does it just take sealant?
2. Does the oil need to be drained beforehand? (Had to ask)

I'm hearing a gnarly noise at around 2k Rpm coming from the upper timing cover with a stethoscope. Thinking the guide rails are toast. Going to change those, the chain, and pop on a new crankshaft seal while I'm in there.

it takes sealant aka form in place gasket aka FIPG.

dont buy the stuff from autozone/orielly etc. the factory stuff is loctite 5900 - you can order it - its a bit pricey though.

however you can buy toyota FIPG at the dealer everyday - its the same stuff but blended by threebond as threebond 1207B (napa also carries it under aisin engine sealant)

your GM dealer can also sell you their engine sealant which is great too.

the ultra gray etc may or may not work - Ive heard its a direct replacement of the threebond 1207 but have not seen any document saying that, OTOH the GM stuff is pretty strong and sets up so that you can even fill the system unlike other sealants where they tell you to wait for 24 hrs. If you can wait then the toyota stuff is pretty sweet. I have not seen any leaks on any jobs that I did with either the GM or toyota stuff.

Do not forget that fan bearing bracket takes an o-ring to prevent leakage. Ask me how I know.

Let us know if you need to replace the oil pan gasket too. On one of my E23 BMWs the timing chain guide rail was completely missing... it was in many parts in the oil pan.

My lower cover is leaking on the passenger side, which I suppose is to be expected at 301k. Please share any tips after you finish the job.

I have already replaced my fan bearing bracket with a Febi one and found out that same thing. I thought it was a metal washer, but figured out it was an o-ring after it crumbled. I'm going to take lots of pics.

How much more difficult is it to get the oil pan off? Couldn't hurt to check for nuts and bolts floating around in there....

I had planned to order loctite 5900 from pelican.

Well I have not pulled the oil pan on my 300SEL. I have on other I6 cars and aside from the usual jacking of the motor up and supporting the motor mount arms by some wood it is pretty easy. Just a bit messy.
