Replacing exterior molding clips

Don't know if this belongs in Bodywork; if so, mods, please move.

This is for my 91 300E, W124.

Accidentally broke of the rear molding trim in front of the rear tire.

Ordered the clips to re-attach, but maybe I ordered the wrong 2 parts?

Or additional parts are needed, like the top and bottom on the car?

As you can see, the part with the metal clip (near the cat) is not going to fit the 2 holes on top.

I'm ready to use some heavy duty two faced tape - this is so frustrating trying to get the right parts.

Am very reluctant to remove the other side to see how it is attached cause it might break the clips. Then I'll have two side with missing trim.

A Guess....

My guess is you got the wrong clips. When I needed some clips & emailed the parts guy at my local dealer & casually told him I needed a couple, he emailed me back a diagram and said to tell him specifically which ones. As I recall from the diagram, every single clip used on the fenders, doors, and rear quarter..... ..that's the one in question??....was numbered on the diagram. Every single clip! There were 10 or 12 or more clips on each side and each clip had a number.

Maybe you have a dealer that could email you the same diagram I got so you could verify that you're ordering the right clips.

mbzr4ever, definitely talk to the Parts Department at your local MB dealer ... best to go there, if possible. The tech should be able to identify the proper clips you need to reinstall the trim piece. If you have ever looked at MB diagrams they can be confusing.

Thanks, everyone for your suggestions.

I thought about going to the "MB dealer", but they moved off island a few years ago. A Honda dealer is representing them now - will be my last resort.

pwogaman - thanks for the link. Looks like they have a good assortment and I should be able to find the clips I need.

EDIT: Found this diagram to be of help:

Yep That's The Diagram....

....you want. That's what I got from the dealer. And as you can see there's a separate number for every single clip. Good luck.

P.S. I think MB deserves a complaint letter for moving off island. Anybody driving an MB in the middle of the Pacific deserves better service!
