w124 seat belt question

Hey all,

I'm starting to question weather the seat belt in my 91 300E is faulty... Every seat belt that I've known always locks up when you pull on it hard and fast, the other day I tried it on mine and it didn't lock. I pulled as fast as I could and nothing.. Are they supposed to do this? I know it has pretensioners but I would imagine even in a small crash that doesn't require SRS the seat belt should still lock right?

I'd hate to get in an accident and find out there that my seat belt is faulty, with my face meshed into the windshield :/

Wunderbar... since I'm going to have to replace it, any info on the job? That plastic piece on the pillar has to come out, does the seat also? Is this an easy job? Called Mercedes and the part is 389$ -_-

There is a firm back in the Boston area that rebuilds them for around $60. I had the same problem with my '97 CL500. We removed the entire belt assembly, mailed it to them they turned it right around. Works perfectly. I would also suggest when you have it removed from the car to soak it in lukewarm solution of Tide laundry soap to get the dirt out.
I think the name of the firm is "Safety Restore"

Thank you for the website!!! 65$ is muuuuuch better than 389! I have to contact them though because they say they repair models up to 1996 and my w124 is a 1991 so hopefully they will still take it! Just unsettling to know the seat belt doesn't work

I do not know about 91 300E but I would go to the JY and pull on the belt of the same model year. Some belts work on 'jerking' movement of belt, some works on car's movement. There is a pendulum inside and if the car decelerates then it will trigger and lockup the belt. I think you can try to brake HARD and pull on the belt at the same time and see whether it locks. I suspect it would.

the whole B pillar finisher comes out - in your 91 its made from aluminum and is pulled straight out from the bottom and centre and a bit upwards from the belt lever bolt part on the top. The clip is very stout.

the belt unit is then unfastened from the car and snaked out of the plastic slider piece. Make note on how its assembled.

the last w124 belt design and B pillar finisher design is slightly different, the belt holder that is bolted to the pillar near the roof is different and does not fit the finisher of the old model.

I tried this (broke my old finish piece) - found an aluminum one which was useless for me - repaired my old one with a piece of metal and pop rivets.

Thanks for the replies! I messed around with the belt by just pulling on it and now it locks off and on and pulled hard the same situation with the passenger side, I have yet to call the company up and see if they are able to refurbish mine but will do so..

Thank you anyways Hanno for the offer, I'll give these people a call and see what happens next! Just want to get these things fixed!

Appreciate that. Sounds like exercising them made a difference. Also thank Zulfiqar for providing fitment information.

Well, gave that company a call and they don't refurb my seat belts, purely 1996 year models and up only option is the 389$ part from dealer, worth it if I ever need it, just unsettling to know mine isn't working until I fix it >_< everyone check your seat belts and make sure they're working properly! Don't want to be driving around thinking they're fine and they're as good as nothing! thanks everyone for your info on this!
