W124 SRS & ABS "Pre-check" not working?

I have a 92 300E (2.6L) with 139K miles and the SRS light was constantly ON. It seems that the light turned on as I was moving the driver's seat backwards. The car has the newer W124 steering wheel and air bag, the seat belts and receiver units work fine.

I tested the voltage while the car was running and it is a constant 14.34 Volts. I conducted a few tests to resolve the SRS light being always ON. I did a few simple tests without a code reader (I don't have one). Here is what I did:

- Moved driver's seat all the way forward and raised rear of seat all the way up
- Disconnect battery (negative side only)
- Check wiring under of seat - all wiring looked good
- Disconnected red connector from seat belt receiver and then reconnected
- Connected battery again

I then turned the key to the second position and all the warning lights came on except the SRS and ABS lights (never came on at all). It seems that a pre-check of the SRS and ABS system did not occur.

I then disconnected the battery and disconnected the red connector under the seat and left it unplugged. I connected the battery again and turned the key. Once again, no SRS or ABS lights ignited during pre-check. Shouldn't that SRS light come on since the seat belt receiver was unplugged?

Does a code need to be cleared so that the pre-check occurs? Is there a dependency between SRS & ABS? All the other warning lights work fine.

I would appreciate your assistance since I am concerned that their is a safety issue. The SRS constant ON problem went away but now I have a problem that both the SRS and ABS light don't come on upon system checking. Thanks.

Louis

behind the battery, there's a relay with 1 or 2 fuses in it. replace the relay. it powers both the abs and srs and i'll bet it's more than 8 years old. don't replace the fuses, replace the relay. good luck, chuck.

I obtained a Diagnostic Code Reader and connected it to my 16 pin set-up. I did NOT get any flashing lights from Socket 6 for the SRS system.

I then disconnected the red connector under the driver's seat and retested to see if I received a code (flashing lights from the reader). I did NOT receive any lights at all and the SRS and ABS light in the cluster never come on at all (no pre-check).

I know the bulbs in the cluster for ABS and SRS worked since my original problem was that the SRS light was always on for the past week.

Any other tests I can perform? What can be wrong? Thanks.
