300E Stalling Problem during low fuel

I’ve been having a stalling problem with my 300E ever since I’ve owned the car (about a year). When ever I let the fuel drop below ¼ tank the engine will stall. I’ve been able to get it to a gas station and fill in time, but its kind of an annoying problem that might leave me on the road some day.

The problem was first mentioned to me by the first owner when I purchased the car. He said it had left him on the side of the road when he reached the ¼ tank mark. I decided to see if it was true, and it soon happened to me. When I reached about ¼ tank the engine lost all power and I idled to a stop. The engine was still running so I went to a gas station to fill up. Thinking I solved the problem with a full tank, I continued on, and this time it completely shut off. It took a few cranks to get it going, but it did. To this day, I fill it up before ¼ tank. I’ve changed the fuel filter and few of the major hoses except the hose form the tank to the pumps.

I’ve researched the topic and found a few possible problems.

1. The fuel lines are collapsing under the vacuum of the fuel pumps.
2. One of the dual inline fuels filters are faulty, causing a permanent drop in fuel pressure.
3. Under low head pressure in the tank the gas is flashing inside the fuel pumps, causing low of fuel flow and ultimately shut down.
4. Accumulator problems?


I’d appreciated any possible solutions or suggestions that anybody has on this problem.

Could it be empty but still showing 1/4?

The car is a 1989 300E. I think the car takes like 14 gallons and when I fill it up from 1/4 tank, I will only put around 10 gallons in.

could it be the fuel pump relay or the ovp?

Not sure if they have anything to do with your problem, but it sounds really strange to me, and I am interested in finding out what it is, because I haven't heard of this happening before...

Another thought I have is that mabe the fuel cap is not sealing correctly, letting air into the system, so maybe at low tank, air is getting sucked in? Just a theory though, I really have no basis for it other than a brainstorm.

I had the same problem in my 1990 300te. When the mechanic took the tank down he said that it looked like it had been bottomed out. I don't ever recall doing that but he just took a pry bar to it and pushed it out. Ever since problem solved.

Where is the fuel pump relay and how could this be checked for correct operation? Also what is the ovp?

I don't think it's the gas cap. When I fill up, air pressure is relseased when I open the cap.

It seems that the engine starves for fuel. The reason they went to a dual pump is because one pump couldn't handle the job. They had recalls on it and my problem could be related.

Don't be too sure about that. The 260SE and 300SE/L have one pump and it works just fine.

I think there was a problem with the fuel flashing (vapor lock) in the lines and I'm not sure why, but they added a second pump to a few of the models.

I had the same problem with my 89 300 TE. It was initially diagnosed as a bad fuel pump, but that did not solve the problem. They then looked at the fuel tank and discovered that the problem was there. I think it had something to do with the baffle, but because some parts were not available individually, the entire tank was replaced. I'm only on my fourth tank since the repair, but I can now drive until the reserve light comes on without any problems.

97 E420 thats jealous of all the $ being spent on the TE so it decides to light up its ASR and ABS warning lights on the SAME DAY I pick up the TE from the shop!
