Unhappy valves clattering 300E

MY valves have started to clatter on my 90 300E (2.6). I use regular 10w-40 oil and have the oil changed about every 4,000 miles. The car has close to 150K miles.

Does anyone have an idea on how to quiet the valves down? What would happen if I started using Mobil 1?

I have a 91 ranger that has used Mobil 1 since day 2. It has over 200k miles on it and it is very quiet. Many other people on the ranger site complain about valve noise and the solution is to change to Mobil 1. Has anyone had success with the change to Mobil 1 on a car with high miles?

It is a bit unusual for the valve train to become noisy at 150k, unless something is amiss. With good, solid maintenance, i.e. 4k oil changes, the problem is probably something related to a component failure. Are all the valves noisy?. What is your oil pressure gauge telling you?? Are you absolutely sure it's the valves?? The kind of oil you are using (unless it's junk) shouldn't really affect the function of the lifters. BTW, 150k is not really high mileage for an M103.

What amount of valve noise/clatter is considered normal? My M116 420 definitely has valve clatter, but to me it isn't bad. You can only really hear it when the hood is up and you kinda have to listen for it......it's not that loud to where you wanna say "Whoa, what is that!?!?" So should there be NO valve noise, or is a certain amount deemed normal?
