Procedure to check if Ball Joints are bad?

I have some inner wear on the tire in the front end. I for sure need an alignment, but I would like to see if anyone here knows if MB has a specific way to check for play in the ball joints?

I'd rather replace them if they have play BEFORE taking it to the dealer for an alignment.

Its my 2008 E350 4Matic.

^ Link -- doesn't look a hard replacement, nor expensive.

I don't want to replace them for no reason though, hence can anybody give any advice on a way to check?

Jack car up, remove the wheel, and pull and push on the hub by holding on to the sides of the rotor. If there is movement, replace ball joints. You will also notice squeaking and creaking on a worn ball joint

A factory tech might know if there is a n MB specific way, usually a close inspection with a good lighting and an adequate pry bar will reveal any looseness in the joint. If you have a lift you can get the car up and then use a tall stand under the suspension to then look at it without everything hanging as well. Without a lift you can jack the corner up enough to hang the tire a inch or two and then use a long lever to lift the tire from below while watching the ball joint move.
