Intermittent Start Problem

Hi, guys. I have a 2.5 Turbo diesel 1998 that has done 153,250 miles and still going strong. Mercedes C class w202.

The problem is when I place and turn the key in the ignition, the coils heat up but nothing happens when I then turn the key fully.

The problem happens now and again and has continued over 4 years. The engine will always start first time when it cranks over, but when the engine will not crank over, I remove and replace the key several times until it does.

Any ideas,any one?

Toot, toot!
