Only 38,000 miles and the default warning Alternator / Battery is on. Every thing seems to work fine, but I don`t want to drive the 25 miles to the shop. Not a DIY issue as it`s covered by warranty. My question is can it be harmful to drive to the shop and could there be a separate issue that can be a DIY?

I need more information before saying it is OK to drive or not.

Do you have a volt meter and battery charger?

The first step is to measure battery voltage with the car. If the car was sitting without being run or battery on charge for a few hours you should get:

State of charge for a 12 volt lead acid battery ( how full is the gas tank )
This does not measure capacity, you need to do a load test for that. ( how big is the gas tank )
12.66 100 % charge
12.42 75 %
12.18 50 %
11.94 25 %
11.70 0 %

Next, start the engine and measure battery voltage. When the engine starts the voltage should pop up above 12.66 . After the car runs for a few minutes it should be around 13.8 to 14.2 ( the exact voltage varies depending on the car 14.6 isn't too high )

If the voltage does not pop up after the engine is running, the alternator isn't recharging the battery. Check to see that the belt is still on and alternator rotating.

If you recharge the battery it could probably make a 25 mi trip _IF_, the battery is in good condition, not ready to fail and all unneeded electrical loads are shut off ( heater fan, headlights, radio, rear window defogger, heated seats and more. )

If the engine running voltage rises above 15 V at idle and goes even higher ( over 16 V ) when the engine is brought to 2,000 RPM, shut the engine off and don't drive it. High charging system voltage can damage electronics throughout the car, have it towed.

If the vehicle is covered by MB warranty then the cost to tow it is covered as well......
