'SLS Delete' spring advice

Hi Guys,

We are converting a 560SEC over to standard steel rear suspension, due to a multiple component failure.

What springs would we be better off with? (the vehicle rarely carries any excessive weight and does not tow)

Standard and shims or is there a better alternative?

Thanks in advance,

Hemi265

If you want a stock ride height then I'd try standard springs with the appropriate shim height. You might have to fiddle about with the rubber shims to get it right though.

I don't know for sure but I assume if you've got SLS on a 560SEC you don't have the anti-dive set up as well? It is probably worth a quick look in the FSM for the approved spring / shim / shock combinations to see if there's a difference in uncompressed spring length between the three systems.

All 560s have anti-dive rear axle control-arms.

It would be cheaper to fix the SLS as-is. The most expensive item are the hydraulic rams, which rarely fail, at $400/each.

After the cost of switching to a regular power steering pump, there is almost no point.

Outside the US, i.e., the rest of the world, W126 cars of all engines were delivered with or without SLS, consequently springs & dampers from 380 and 420 SECs are the most readily available and are of correct rates.

If you'll post VIN, I'll try to calculate number of points & select correct p/n (for virtual "560 SEC w/o SLS").

The springs 116 324 08 04 & shims 115 325 22 44 for springs with blue mark or 115 325 23 44 for springs with red one will work almost perfectly.

This is great

Hi,

I'd like to join in here.

I've got a S600 in Kampala Uganda. My VIN is WDB1400571A023712. This is a Japanese market model. Made it's way over to Africa about 12 years ago.

The previous owner partially performed an SLS-delete. They scrounged up some used shocks, and welded extensions on the eyes to make them fit.

There also appear to be different springs added. They are K&F # 319 432. I don't think these are stock, as they look far too new.

The hydraulic lines for the rear struts were just left dangling. As I'm assuming the pump is ruined, I feel the best way forward is to just refit heavier springs and new shocks.

Any help on part numbers for proper rear springs would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

A virtual S 600 L w/o SLS (non-factory ver.!) & with identical equipment.

Coil springs 140 324 14 04 + shims 140 321 08 84 for springs with blue mark or 140 321 09 84 for springs with red mark.
Shock-absorbers 140 320 03 31.

Thanks for this.

I didn't realize the S600 of that vintage came without the SLS.

This helps immensely.
