Dropped Valve Saftey Check?

Hello all,

Just finished up doing the timing chain (and lifters, and ps pump rebuild, and...) on my 1986 560SEL.

While all the timing marks align perfectly and the engine rotates by hand very smoothly, I did experience a bit of chain slippage on the passenger side cam while re-installing the followers / rocker arms which I corrected.

But it has left me wondering is there is any sort of test I can do before I fire her up to check to see if I managed to dislodge a valve against a piston by “tripping” the keepers while it was out of alignment?

Many thanks in advance!

If a valve hits a piston, you will feel the crank come to a bind or hard stop while turning by hand ( that's why turning by hand is always a good idea ) For a gas engine in general, it takes something like 4 + teeth off for that to occur and some engines are immune.

Even if a piston hits a valve, the keepers won't come out. You must push on the retainer while holding the valve head for that to occur. The only test is to eye up the retainers and look for a raised keeper.

Thank You!

Many thanks for the reply.

That is pretty much what I thought as well but, as they say, better safe than sorry when it comes to checking/re-checking/cross-checking.

Cheers!
