I have a strong odor of diesel fuel in my 83 SD's trunk; it's even damp on the right side with fuel.
I wonder where it might be coming from. I had some sandbags in the area behind the wheels and wonder if a hose got pulled off? Any help appreciated. Thanks. |

On the right side of the trunk area is the filler neck for the fuel tank. Possibly when you fill the tank some of the fuel is getting around the rubber grommet that seals the filler neck. There also is a drain for the filler neck area, look at these areas first. Rarely does the tank leak! Remove carpet & inspect w/filling tank.

It sounds like i need to take off that panel, crawl into the trunk and really look at those hoses. Not my first choice, as there is quite a bit of diesel fuel dampening things back there. Are the trunk trim pieces behind the wheel well available at reasonable cost or can I wash off the diesel fuel with something (what?)? Gasoline comes to mind, but the danger of the vapors makes me glad that it's only diesel fuel leaking.

Yesterday I crawled into the trunk, and reattached a rubber hose to the pipe next to the fuel filler cap. Time will tell if this takes care of the problem. I refueled the car, averaging 18.5 mpg in city driving. Is this typical fuel mileage?

Robert,
To start with you should remove the carpet that has had contact with fuel & pressure wash them & then leave them out to dry. Your mileage is a little low, has anyone richened the fuel mixture to get more power? |

I'm not sure, having just bought the car two weeks ago. One of my rear tires has a leak, so lots of that tank was on a severely underinflated tire. I do get a fair bit of smoke on a full throttle acceleration. Valve adjustment or mixture setting?? I never knew this was adjustable. It has 263K miles. The first tank, not driven out by me, might have gotten 26.8 mpg mostly stop and go highway if I can assume the trip odometer was reset at the time it was refueled. Thanks for the advice on the cleaning; probably most of the car would benefit from a painstaking cleaning.

The fuel mixture wasn't supposed to be adjustable, but give some people a chance & they'll find a way!! To do this you have to break the seal on the fuel injection pump.
