Question Procedure for removing steering wheel

What is the correct procedure for removing the stock (airbag) steering wheel on my 500E? Is it just a matter of disconnecting the battery and removing the screws?

1. Disconnect battery
2. Use a torx bit to undo the airbag formt he two holes int he back. I'm not sure ont he size, but I manaed to do mine with a regular allen wrench.
3. Get a breaker bar and a socket with the right size allen bit on it.

Break that sucker loose, unscrew it, and the wheel should pop right off easily. Make sure you make note of the steering position. I suggest you set it straight before taking it off.

IF you are putting in another wheel altogether, aftermarket or from another MB that will fit, installation should be the reverse. All in all, not too difficult, the allen bolt that holds the wheel on is the only tough one to remove, but with the right leverage and a breaker bar, its not too bad.

Instructions from ALL Data service manual for my car (87 300D) calls for disconnecting the battery and WAIT for few minutes (don't remember how many minutes, possibly 10) before removing the airbag.

Yeah its a good idea to make sure you take your time with it. we don't want any air bags going off in your face...

If alldata says wait a few minutes, I would do so.

Time should not matter , cant remember last time disconnected battery for steering wheel removal just dont turn on key. Reason they used to want you to disconnect battery is cause they thought static electricity would detonate airbag. Now whenever you disconnect airbag on most it is automatically shorted via connector on airbag or any other part of SRS system that can detonate. If it makes you feel better disconnect it ,but it doesnt have to be just dont turn the key on.
