89 300TE - suddenly kills while driving

Facts: 1989 300TE, 178,000 miles, excellent condition.

Symptoms: While driving, 25 mph in residential streets or even 60 mph on highways, the engine goes totally dead. I lose power steering, dash waring lights all light up, radio and blower remain on. Prior to going dead, I get no warning - the car is running great then just quits.

What's next: I pull over to the side of the road, put car in neutral, re-start the engine. Engine starts right up, no hesitation, smooth idle and I am able to take off again and resume my driving.

Can anyone point me to a solution? This generation of vehicle leaves no codes in the computer - the dealer says it pretty much has to come in dead to be able to ID the problem. I am hoping I can do better than that.

Only two common failures.

1 fuel pump relay
2 TDC sensor on rear of engine.

Benzmac -

Thanks for pointing me to the 2 probable directions - I'll get right on them. I appreciate being able to do something pro-actively rather than waiting for total failure. It has been a little challenge to get the vehicle [safely] from flowing highway traffic to the shoulder for a safe re-start.
