There is a distinct (read: loud) whine from the engine that rises in volume with RPM. One mechanic suggested that it is the water pump bearing, and to put up with it until it becomes unbearable (pun intended). It has gotten somewhat noisier over time, and I feel as though I'm driving a turbine-powered vehicle. Is this a typical problem? Could it be something else? The dealership wasn't a lot of help, either.

This is a problem that is almost impossible to diagose over the internet. Any of the idler brgs, fan pulley bracket, water pump brgs., alternater brgs., or A/C compressor clutch brgs. could make a "whining" sound. An expert MB tech needs to look at the car now that the noise is worse, and possibly remove the belt to be able to freely rotate the pulleys and check for a bad brg. <brg=bearing> ------------------ MB Medic 14 year MB tech 7 year shop foreman @ independent MB/Volvo shop [This message has been edited by MB Medic (edited 04-10-99).] |

Any of the 6 or so bearings could cause this. I would have the bearing bracket and the alt. checked soon, but don't forget about the pulley on the tensioner. I have seen it make some strange noises. (to properly diagnose this your mechanic will need a stethascope)
