190E 2.6 Manual conversion procedure
So I am picking up a manual transmission for my 190E 2.6, at the same time I am swapping in a M103 3.0L. I have done a manual swap on a 240D before but I am wanting to know the intricacies of this particular job.
The manual transmission is a 717.435 from an 89 260E. It has the dual mass flywheel. It comes with the W124 trans mount, W124 driveshaft, plus the hydraulics (I will be replacing these) and the shifter/shift linkages and pedals. I have a few questions: How do I time the flywheel to the engine correctly? Will I need the W201 manual speedometer cable? I currently have a W124 auto speedometer cable that is 1480MM, I believe the manual W201 one is 1490MM Will I need the W201 manual crossmember or will the auto one work with drilling new holes? Is the manual transmission mount different? The EPC only lists one mount for all 2.6 engined W201s. Any other quirky things I should know about? I am going to have to have my driveshaft modified, does anyone have measurements for the length needed for the manual 2.6 front driveshaft length? Thanks

To time the flywheel to the engine simply mount the timing windows to the same position as the outgoing flexplate.
There are different length manual and auto speedo cables but the automatic one is longer so you can reuse it. You will need a manual W201 cross member because the manual transmission is shorter. I think I still have the only that came out of my 92 190e 2.6 5spd before putting the transmission in the 300d. Let me know if you need it. The mount is the same. You will want to use a new one tho. Quirks: Install a new slave cyl before putting the trans in the car. The W201 trans tunnel is very tight and its virtually impossible to do the job with the trans in the car. Also its very difficult to bleed the clutch by pumping the pedal and opening and closing the bleed valve. I used a mityvac. The 3 shift rods are about 3/4" shorter on the W201 than the W124. You will need to modify or get new ones The pipe between the master and slave cyl are different between the W201 and W124. You will need to get a new one or try to bend the existing one. The 260e and 190e have exactly the same manual front driveshaft length so just reuse that. I'm using the 190e 2.6 manual front DS half in my W124 300d.

ive done 5 mb300 conversions. this engine does not require flywheel timing. that is for 1998 e320. the drive shaft needs to be 34 inches long. the front guibo part is a different size and needs to be swapped with a 190 sized guibo when adjusting legnth to fit the transmission. the linkages, all 3 need to be legthened 3/4 inch. i used metal straps across the trans support. the trans mount is the same. everything else is plug and play bleed the clutch by putting a tube connecting the pass brake caliper to the clutch slave. looten both connections and pump the brake 15 times. tighten the connectors and your done. easy peasy
driveshaft for the 190 will fit as long as it was taken from a manual. mark the 2 before taking apart to replace the center bearing. |
