w124 E320 exhaust
Well, all of the sudden today my E320 sounded like an '88 Civic with the mufflers sawzalled off!
Looked under the car and there's a big hole in one of the pipes that leads to the resonator. The rear muffler is looking a bit rusty as well. What's the best strategy for this? Are people going with OEM replacements or ia there a better aftermarket system available? |

There's nearly always a better after market system but it might end up sounding just like that '88 Honda!
If you like that kind of thing Remus is probably the name to go for though when you see the costs of just a back box perhaps you'll go for a stock solution...

Why don't you go to a muffler shop and have them cut the hole out and re-weld it. Probably be cheaper and you still have your stock setup.

JP-8, I would try Ismalley's approach before spending money on new parts. I had a muffler shop repair a hole in the exhaust pipe on our 1991 300CE.

I think I will, but it seems like if one part is rusted through, the entire assembly is on its way out. Looks like the part is going for ~$130 on eBay. Might be worth it to just remove and replace.

If you're lying on your back in the driveway then replacing the whole system is usually much easier than cutting bits off under a car.
Exhausts are vindictive: soot + open wounds = pain + misery (!)

indeed!
i have had success with getting an indy exhaust shop to fix sone rust issues for really cheap. i also had a monro muffler decline to do those repairs for some reason. needless to say i don't go to there much anymore
