brake master cylinder lines- is there a trick to reattaching them?

this is for a 99 camry. Is there a trick to reattaching the lines to the master cylinder? ugh. the last thing I was is to cross thread the soft metal.


I think I will remove the entire intake bellows to have more room to work. it would be a major nightmare to replace the entire hard line

They are pretty straight forward, just push the line till the cone face contacts the metal line flare, then with your fingers thread the nut on, you may need to move the line up or down or sideways depending on how its bent out of shape relative to the cylinder, Once a couple of threads catch you use a wrench to tighten it down.

make sure the threads are not mangled up if its a replacement cylinder - seen that more than once.

x2. Pull back the threaded collar as you maneuver the line into the master cylinder then hold the line against the master cylinder as you gently start the threads.

Look at the line in 2 planes to make sure it is going in straight.

Don't constrain the line or master cylinder so you can move things around a bit.

Wind in by hand.

Make sure the threads are the same diameter / pitch as the old line.

The $10 you spend on a pair of Harbor Freight "Tube Bending Pliers" will be worth every penny when you're trying to get things lined up. They allow you to get a solid grip in the tubing while at the same time giving you leverage to move the line you're re-attaching the small amount it might need to avoid cross threading. They also allow you to grasp the tubing in a place close to the master cylinder where it's often difficult to get your hands and fingers in to do the same. They are Harbor freight so you'll have to ignore the fit and the finish but they will help you get that job done easier.

I'm with 97 on this. You need to loosen the master cylinder bolts so you have ample wiggle room to line up the fitting so its square with the M/ cylinder. I would bench bleed the master cylinder prior to installation anyways.

I have had a replacement MC come with poor threads. The line wouldn't thread in until I cleaned up the threads (gently) using a tap.
