C230k Gas pump shuts off when filling

Hi, Have a 1999 c230k, when you go to fill the car you get about a 1/4gal in and it shuts off let gas settle another 1/4gal and so on. Dove car this morning about 7miles to station so car was not hot the temp here was about 40deg. This has been going on for a few months tried other stations same thing. It will take like a half hour to fill car.
Thanks for looking and your help.

On some cars there is an "evaporative canister" as part of the fuel tank system. If a car is "topped off" when filling up too many times, that canister can fill with gasoline and keep the gas tank from being able to ventilate when filling with gas. That is the most common problem and the solution is to not top it off once it is full.

There can also be problems with the ventilation system, valves not opening, etc. This can be tested using the factory service manual instructions.

And a way to fill these cars is to place the gas pump handle on the slowest setting when filling. Or stick a ball point pen under the pump fill handle so it fills very slowly.

And some service stations have less sensitive pump handles than others - try elsewhere.

This is a broken/stuck evap vent valve, This valve is open with the engine off and provides an air relief for the tank while filling up.

get under the car and look near the filler neck - there should be a wide tube/hose going to a box looking thing with an electric connector. Remove that unit and clean the valve with some WD40 and make sure the venting filter/tube is clean.

It will fix this problem. This entire system is not unique to Mercedes Benz, its part of a US mandate for all cars that run on public roads in USA.

Look up the generic code on the web, you will find it a problematic issue on american cars and those sites will have good diagrams and procedures on how to test and repair this system.
