99 E320 4matic trans issue

Transmission started to slip occasionally scanned EGS for codes got 135 and 147 cleared the codes and reset adaptation now it won't shift from 1st gear turn it off and on again couple of times then it will start shifting as soon as you turn off and start it again same thing won't shift from first gear after dozen tries scanned it again EGS status OK. Back at it again dozen tries now it won't turn over let it sit for awhile it'll turn over now just getting code 18 (gear shift implausible )
Car is 99 E320 4matic 281k fluid is full looks clean was replaced at 240k filter and adapter
no leaks from adapter TCM is dry. Conductor plate was replaced at 150k from the previous owner. Not sure if its tranny or the conductor plate is bad again.
No CEL on ME status OK
Thanks for reading.

Pull up live data and make sure actual shifter position matches what the trans computer is seeing. There were a few threads here where spilled liquid / general shifter wear caused issues.

Got the following from live data on EGS

Start- selector lever position P
Target gear P
Actual gear P
Reverse-selector lever position P
Target gear N
Actual gear N Car moves in reverse
Neutral-selector lever position N
Target gear --
Actual gear -- car idles
Drive-selector lever position D
Target gear --
Actual gear -- Car moves forward
Back to Park- selector lever position P
Target gear --
Actual gear --
This is where it wont turn over the key turns no click nothing, after a minute

Park-selector lever position P
Target gear P
Actual gear P here it starts
The older version gear selector is on the car trans computer isn't seeing the same, selector is shot or the trans computer?
Not sure about swapping both items from my 98 E320 rear wheel drive just to test.

thanks

Thanks 97 SL320 it was the gear recognition on the shifter forgot I had the old one from my 98 the back up lights wouldn't turn on. Swapped it out shifts OK now just back up lights don't work until I get new one. Both got soaked with liquids teenagers just don't care. Thanks again

Have a look at my post 16 in the link below , I posted a wiring diagram / truth table for 99 and older 722.6 trans. If your shifter goes P R N D 4 3 2 1 , you still have the early shifter , if it goes P R N - D + , you have the later shifter that talks over CAN. Early / late won't interchange. EGS 51 is the early one and EGS 52 "should" be the later one.

For testing I've swapped EGS 51 modules and about the only immediate difference is 4 cyl / low power 6 cyl had a different internal gear ratio than the high power 6 / V8 / V12 cars, this will force limp and trigger a code.

I just saw your it is fixed post.

I haven't had the shift position module apart, however it probably would respond to cleaning.
