96 E300 Infrared Key Fob Programming.

Does anyone know the procedure for programming a key fob for a 1996 E300 W210? It is the flip key and it is not chipped.

I have never used the remote since I bought the car about 4 years ago.

I just replaced the batteries in the remote.
I tested to see if it was sending a signal with my cell phone camera in the dark and It sends a pretty decent beam as far as I can tell.

The fob is missing the red lens bulb cover.

I read the manual. It does not give instructions on how to program.

I checked the central control fuse, and replaced it because it was old and crusty looking.

I read a few different programming instructions.

the first. Point fob at car. Briefly push button twice. within 30 seconds Insert key and turn to position 2.
This did not work.

The second. just put it in the ignition. Does not work.

reading on benzworld some guy is saying you basically point the remote at the car push the button then lock and unlock the car. My driver door lock linkage is out. I need to get to that.
So I tried it several times with the trunk lock.

All the central locking systems work as they should. When I hold the key to either side the windows roll up and down etc..

Also, my rear view mirror is a little wobbly. Thinking maybe the IR receiver is bad or has a loose wire.
But would like to try and do the procedure correctly before I go down that road.

OK. I think I read this correctly. I do 4, 4.1,4.2,4.3 ? Or do I also do 1 and 2 first?

Also, I am missing the red lens on my remote. The bulb works, just no red lens. Will this make a difference?

Nope... This didn't work.
But my key fob part number is different then the one on the chart.

But I'm going to assume it isn't that.

I tested the fuses for the control unit. Both fuses get power.

The number 14 fuse(central control unit, infrared control unit, parking assist) does not have power when the car is off. But does when on.
The number 17 (infrared control unit, diagnostic socket, carb test coupling) fuse has power all the time.

Any thoughts?
Is it time to try removing and troubleshooting the receiver on the mirror?
